Ohio Challenge Invitation
Dear Pilots,
We are pleased to invite you to fly in the 23rd Annual Ohio Challenge, taking place July 17–19, 2026, in Middletown, Ohio.
Hot air ballooning has long been an important part of Middletown and the surrounding communities, dating back to the hosting of the U.S. Nationals in the early 1990s. Pilots consistently praise the area for its excellent landowner relations and abundant, pilot-friendly landing options. The Ohio Challenge is a well-established, family-friendly festival that attracts more than 30,000 spectators throughout the weekend. Conveniently located, Middletown is right off I-75 just 30 minutes from both Dayton and Cincinnatiattractions,
Total guaranteed pilot cash payout is $6,000, including $1,000 awarded to the Ohio Challenge Champion. Each morning flight will also feature a $1,000 pole grab, adding excitement and opportunity.
All competitive flights are BFA sanctioned and FAA waivered, offering well-designed, challenging tasks suitable for pilots of all experience levels. We are excited to welcome back Shawn Raya as this year’s Competition Director. WatchMeFly will be used for event registration and flight monitoring.
Pilots will receive $125 for attending pilot briefings for:
- Two (2) morning flights
- Two (2) evening flights
- One (1) glow event on either Friday or Saturday
Popular complementary evening meals on Friday and Saturday are provided for pilots and crew at evening briefings.
To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience, complimentary pilot hotel rooms are provided for Friday and Saturday nights for pilots living at least 30 miles from Middletown Airport. Additional pilot and crew rooms are available at the pilot’s expense at the negotiated rate.
This event is limited to approximately 25 + pilots, and a minimum of 50 hours PIC is required. Early application is strongly encouraged to secure your spot.

Application Fees:
Non-logo balloon pilot: $75
Corporate logo balloon pilot: $ 800
All requested documentation must be submitted for application to be complete. Application fee payment information will be provided with acceptance notification shortly after the deadline.
Application Deadline: March 15, 2026 to allow for FAA waiver completion.
